Punta Blanca, San Marcos island

Looking for some place to cruise out of Santa Rosalia? Try out San Marcos Island. Known for it’s dusty gypsum mine on the south end of the island and can be in hospitable at times.

Being a vacation/ holiday week we decided to visit the south beach between Punta Blanca and Punta Tijera.
This is a particularly well protected cove with great protection from the north swell and some what protected from wind.
The cove is a very wide plateau 19 feet deep. Great sandy bottom and good holding.

There is good hiking and two maintained roads on either side of Punta Blanca. There is a trail/rock scramble across Punta Blanca and right at the point is a scramble to a walk bridge connecting the island to the farthest rock at Punta Blanca. Both roads lead to a town and the town does have a small tienda.

The island is loaded with gypsum also known as hydrated calcium sulfate, Alabaster, selenite and satin spar.
Punta Blanca has not been mined and there are lots of great natural occuring deposits.

As an aside, before the discovery of glass, the most pure forms were cleaved and used for windows during the Roman Empire.
We only stayed one night but it was well worth the sail!
